Almost every hardwood floor in Cedar Park sits directly on concrete. Nobody nails wood to a slab, so what is down is either glued to the concrete or floated over a foam underlayment, and either way there is no cavity below and no air moving under the boards. Water that gets underneath cannot drain, cannot evaporate downward, and ends up held between the slab and the finish on top. That one fact drives every decision we make on these floors.
It also gives us something to listen for. Walk a glued floor that has been wet: where the adhesive has released, the boards sound hollow and give slightly underfoot, and that area is telling you the bond is gone whether or not the wood ever cups. On a floating floor the tell is at the joints, which swell and stop meeting flush. Water usually enters at a tile transition or behind a dishwasher and then travels along the length of the boards, so the wet area is a long finger rather than a circle, and it runs well past anything visible from the doorway.
Pulling the water back up through the boards
Air blown across a finished floor does close to nothing, because the finish that protects the wood also seals the water in. So we take it out through the boards: mats sealed to the surface with a vacuum unit drawing air and moisture up and out through hoses, while a dehumidifier keeps the room dry enough to keep accepting it. Readings come off pins in the wood and a reference taken in a room the water never reached, and the mats move as the wet area shrinks. We hold the pace down on purpose, because a floor pushed dry faster than the wood can equalize crowns and checks its finish, which is a self-inflicted second loss.
